Context chapter 14 (continued)
Today we will continue with the study of chapter 14 "Going through a phase"
The story was first published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, May 2002. Why in a mystery magazine? What is the mystery?
Start off by completing the work from yesterday :
1. Read/listen to the text
2.Word list with 25 words/phrases
3. questions 1-10 on page 186.
4. 2 exercises under Context+ on the web
Then
In pairs:
Continue the story after Debbie says:
"I enjoyed that mummy"
You go into the kitchen, sit down and have a nice cup of tea!
One of you plays the very shocked mother (Cynthia)
and the other plays the very relieved Debbie.
Explain the situation to each other. Then record it.
In groups of 4 discuss the question:
"Is violence ever justified"?
Did Cynthia do the right thing to have Jed beaten up?
What would you do in this situation if you were the mother?
Finally.. In the courtroom
Jed has taken Cynthia to court because of his injuries and he wants compensation. If you were the judge and had all the facts, what would your verdict be?
Look at the 4 suggestions at the bottom of page 187.
Decide in your group on one of these OR give your alternative.

Planner and Listening
Today we just have just 2 activities.
The planner is finally ready. I have taken as many of your suggestions as possible into the planning.
Before Christmas we tested the "Writing" part of the National Test and we said that after Christmas we would even do the "listening" and "reading".
But today let's start with the planner. You have received a paper copy. If you lose it ( no one named..no one blamed!) then there is always a copy on the blog.
Make sure you write up the dates of the major events in your calendar.
The yellow sections mean OWN PLANNING and not staring at the ceiling. These are real grade breakers.
Some other important points

Some other important points
- Word lists- Quite a few students are NOT doing these. That will affect your grade
- Assignments- I am happy if you can go over to using google drive for your work (share with habarimike@gmail.com and give me the rights to edit (redigera) your document
- The context homepage is starting to work for reporting. Use it!

The best laid plans
We were meant to go through the new planner today. I am still missing the document for over half the class.
Start off by re-sending your suggestions please.
I have received from Sana's group, Erik L and Hannes.
Then we continue with where we left off yesterday
We are going to do a listening exercise.
Here is the link.
When you have finished do 2 vocabulary activities and the Post Listening exercise
On the next listening exercise start off by doing the pre-listening activity with a classmate.
Here is the link.
Continue as last time with the vocabulary activities (2 new ones) and post-listening exercise
Finally do the third listening exercise. This is a very serious passage based on a true story.
Here is the link.
It is an amazing story. Why do you think that is so?
Why do you think Ray did not tell people about what he was doing?
Afterwards please click on the Quiz script.
Write up any new words on a wordlist (for next Tuesday).
We finish off by going in to Context online.
The address is www.gleerupslms.se
Log in on your account.
If you have forgotten it please contact Mike.
Go in to the Grammar Section
Do AT LEAST one Pop Quiz.
You can copy the PDF and paste it into your Libre office as an odt file. Save it on your computer or send it to Mike.
Good Luck!!

First lesson of the term
You have been in school three days now, but it is time to say welcome back to English.
We welcome the new students who have joined us.
I was supposed to get your diary by yesterday night.
Two students have not sent this and a third forget to attach the document! This will mean an "F-warning" for the course.
We were going to talk about grades today but we will do that next Monday and Tuesday instead when you will work on your own on some texts to do with Uganda.
This term we will start to focus on this as one important thing for our study program is the field-trip to Soroti in the third year.
We start off by doing an interview about your Christmas holidays.
Here is the document!
Then we will practise a little bit of grammar- namely phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb consists of a verb + preposition which has an idiomatic meaning.
The problem is that the prepositions often are different comparing English and Swedish e.g se UPP ----} look OUT
Look up means something completely different.
I LOOKED UP the meaning of the word in a dictionary. (slå upp)
Here is the document.
Then we are going to do a listening exercise.
Here is the link.
Finally, working in groups of four we are going to do some planning for the course:
1.The course consists of two novels.
We have read "The Boy in the striped pyjamas together.
Are we going to read a book together or are you going to read books individually.
2.Decide in the group on one way we can practise listening
3.Decide one way in the group we can practise speaking
4. Decide on one text from "Context" we can work on together.
5. Decide on one topic in the group we can do a writing assignment about.
Mail your answers to me by the end of the lesson
