Today we continue the theme of culture which we started yesterday.
Make sure you complete the tasks from yesterday- a word list with 25 words from "Red Sari" (chapter 7 in Context) and the questions from the blog.
We are going to have 2 or 3 visitors today, who will tell us about their experience of leaving their home culture and coming to Sweden.
I want you to take notes for one of them and afterwards send me a summary of what the person said.
Don't be afraid to ask your own questions..
Secondly, I want you to do your corrections for the work which I will distribute today.
Finally at the end of the lesson(after 15.15) I will have a chance of having the grade talk with all those who missed it last week.

Red Sari chapter 7 Context
Last week we saw the film " First Ladies' Detective Agerncy" which is set in Botswana and gives a picture of the way of life in an African context.
As you answered in your questions there are big differences between living in Africa and Sweden.
But what is it like living in 2 cultures at the same time?
That is the problem for the young woman in "Red Sari" whose family is from Sri Lanka but who is living in a big city in England.
What would you do if you moved to another country? Would you keep all the Swedish traditions or try to live as close as you can to the new culture?
In New York you have China Town and little Italy.
In Los Angeles you have the East Side where over 91% of the population are latino!
Read the story about Amanthi. Where do think Andrew comes from?
What would you have done in the situation? Would you have followed your mother's wishes or followed your own?
Now do a wordlist!
There are many people in Sweden who come from other cultures. We have many of them in our school.
What do you know about their background and culture?
How would they dress and behave if they were in the country of their birth?

Context chapter 14 (continued)
Today we will continue with the study of chapter 14 "Going through a phase"
The story was first published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, May 2002. Why in a mystery magazine? What is the mystery?
Start off by completing the work from yesterday :
1. Read/listen to the text
2.Word list with 25 words/phrases
3. questions 1-10 on page 186.
4. 2 exercises under Context+ on the web
Then
In pairs:
Continue the story after Debbie says:
"I enjoyed that mummy"
You go into the kitchen, sit down and have a nice cup of tea!
One of you plays the very shocked mother (Cynthia)
and the other plays the very relieved Debbie.
Explain the situation to each other. Then record it.
In groups of 4 discuss the question:
"Is violence ever justified"?
Did Cynthia do the right thing to have Jed beaten up?
What would you do in this situation if you were the mother?
Finally.. In the courtroom
Jed has taken Cynthia to court because of his injuries and he wants compensation. If you were the judge and had all the facts, what would your verdict be?
Look at the 4 suggestions at the bottom of page 187.
Decide in your group on one of these OR give your alternative.
